Prestige Plaza was the place to be last Friday evening as patrons, fans, supporters converged there to witness the first ever Kenyan-Nigerian movie production-‘Brother Jekwu’.You could actually feel the excitement from the elevator as Hennessy and Belvedere cocktails and canapés did the rounds with waitresses serving and welcoming guests who were dressed to the ‘tee’ in gorgeous gowns and dapper suits.
It was an interesting night full of laughter, music, fun and networking opportunities. The cast members in attendance were Juliet Ochieng (who actually organized the event), Mike Ezuruonye from Nigeria (the main star of the movie), Derrick Assetto, Sabina Stadler and Catherine Kamau just to name afew. Mike Ezuruonye and Juliet thanked the guests for coming to support this project, as it took them months to shoot to produce something different yet unique for the African movie market. Mike then went on to reveal that just three days after the movie was released in Nigeria, it got nominated for an AMVCA award which really humbled him to know that people out there really appreciate his work (this being his first self-scripted movie), as the judging team are pan-African (three of the judges were Kenyan).
Through this project he is promoting good cinema culture as they have been getting sold out shows. This was just a teaser to get the public reactions since they have a strong marketing strategy to take it to other countries like Tanzania, Cote D’Ivoire and France. He wants us to tell our African stories to the rest of the world and brand our continent, as he’s already got recognition as an actor in Hollywood and had one of his movies get featured on Netflix. Other cast members in the movie include Huddah Monroe, Klint Da Drunk from Nigeria, Funny Bone from Ghana, Angela Okorie, Wofaifada, Nedu, Florence Nduta, and Ella Ciru amongst others.
The very comical movie tells the story of a village man with native intelligence that is full of adventure, proud and conceited. He is lucky to make it to Kenya on the bill of his corrupt cousin where he gets lost in a tale of his adventure while exploring a new land and his encounter with other folks and two beautiful ladies led to the various comical scenes that add a twist to the story. The movie ‘Brother Jekwu’ was directed by renowned Nigeria director, Charles Uwagbai and was initially released on Friday December 2nd 2016.
